Methods of Colon Hydrotherapy at Serenity
Your initial session will begin by filling out a short medical history form. The therapist will show you the equipment and explain the procedure. The therapist will then leave you to undress from the waist down. You will lie down on your back on a contoured therapy table where you will lower yourself onto the rectal nozzle and cover yourself with a sheet. The rectal nozzle is about the size of a pencil and is lubricated for your comfort. It is inserted no more than two-inches into the rectum. We use FDA registered, Class I, Colenz Professional Enema system colon therapy equipment. We use only gravity systems at Serenity as we feel these are the safest and most effective colonic one can receive.
The water is filtered and typically set to the colon’s internal body temperature for your comfort. It will be gently flowing into your colon the entire session. You will retain the water for as long as is comfortable and then you simply eliminate as you would if sitting on a toilet. It is important to remember not to strain or push so as to avoid causing hemorrhoids. There is no worry about the rectal nozzle falling out; whatever needs to pass will flow around it and down the drain.
The therapist typically will check on you during your session three to four times to make sure all is well and answer any questions you may have as well as letting you know when the session is over. There are walkie-talkies available to you so that you may call the therapist at any time you need assistance. There is a flat panel TV monitor and VCR with education information playing should you choose a method of distraction.
You will be on the table for no more than 45 minutes but please allow yourself 1-hour for your scheduling purposes.
Your initial session will begin by filling out a short medical history form. The therapist will show you the equipment and explain the process. You will then change into a gown (similar to those in a hospital) and lie down on your back on the therapy table where you are covered with a sheet.
A tube or speculum, as it is called, (about 1-inch diameter) is inserted about 4-inches into your rectum. The speculum is attached to the colonic equipment by hoses that allow filtered water to flow into the colon and allow the waste products to flow out. Water will be gently flowing into your colon the entire session. It is important to relax and allow elimination without straining or pushing. We use the Wood Gravitational method of colon therapy.
During your session the colon therapist will do a series of fills and releases. A fill occurs when the therapist stops the water from flowing out of your body. This is done in a similar way as you would plug a drain in a bathtub, and, just like the water in the tub filling the bath, during your colonic the water will fill your colon. This allows the water to travel through the entire colon (assuming there are no blockages or impactions not yet released). By opening the drain the water and excess fecal material is released and your body’s natural peristaltic action (the muscle movement of the colon) takes over.
During your session the therapist will give you a deep abdominal massage helping the colon to relax and release impacted material, while encouraging you to relax and breathe deeply.
The water temperature is often modified throughout your session. Temperatures typically range from 94º to 102º F as long as you are comfortable. This causes dilation and contraction within the colon often increasing peristalsis. I like to call it “colon calisthenics”.

There are several things to consider when deciding which colonic system is right for you. Some of these may include privacy, comfort, bodywork, medical history, etc.
